Tires 101 - How to Store Your Seasonal Tires

If you make the switch from winter to summer tires and store tires in your garage or basement, here are a few tips to keep your tires in tip-top condition --

  1. Before storing, clean your tires and allow them to dry completely.
  2. Use Eagle One A2Z All Wheel & Tire Cleaner to remove the road-grime.
  3. Apply a non-solvent protectant, like 303 Products Tire Balm & Protectant, before placing each tire in its own airtight plastic bag. Remove as much air as possible and close the bag tightly with tape to create personal space for each tire.
  4. Keep your tires out of direct sunlight. UV rays and heat accelerate the tire aging and tire cracking process.
  5. Place the tires in a cool, dry location, away from things like electric motors, furnaces, switches, and sump pumps.
  6. Store tires vertically rather than stacking horizontally to reduce stress and distortion. Stack them on a piece of wood and not directly on the ground.
  7. If you're going to store your winter tires outside, I recommend using a Garagemate Seasonal Tire Cover that's easy to use, waterproof, and lockable.

If you have a vehicle you use only in winter or summer, take a ride when possible. Driving and flexing your tires releases the antiozonants that are built into the rubber and prevent tire cracking and tire-blooming.

Following these tips increase the life of your tires. If you have any questions about tire storage, tire cracking and tire-blooming, let me know.

Of course, you could always take advantage of the Kenwood Tire "Tire Hotel" -- For $50 a season, we keep your tires safe and warm, so you don’t have to worry.

At Kenwood Tire & Auto Service you'll always find honest advice, good tires, quality service, plus the people and support you need to make your new tires a good investment.
